Aldersbrook Road, Wanstead, E11 3RJ
Medical dates:

Medical character:
1963 - 1983

Geriatric

In 1963 the Aldersbrook Unit opened as an annexe for the East Ham Memorial Hospital, under the control of the West Ham Group Hospital Management Committee.

Orginally built 30 years before by the County Borough as a nursery school, the building had formerly been the Aldersbrook Maternity Hospital, which had closed in 1957.  The premises were converted into a hospital with 55 beds for medical cases 'not requiring full treatment'.

In 1974, following a major reorganisation of the NHS, the Hospital came under the control of the City and East London District Health Authority, part of the North West Thames Regional Heath Authority.

The Unit closed in 1983.

Present status (March 2009)

The 3-acre site was sold, apparently for £875,000, in August 1983.  The building was demolished and its site is now Alders Close.
