Oakwood V.A.D. Hospital (also
known as Oakwood Military Hospital) opened in March 1915. Its
first patients were 6 servicemen suffering from frostbite.
The Hospital had 20 beds (later increased to 27) and was affiliated to Colchester Military Hospital.
It was run by the Essex/82 Voluntary Aid Detachment, whose staff included a Matron, Commandant and Quartermaster. Trained nurses were also posted to the Hospital by the Joint War Committee. Two local G.P.s provided medical care.
The Hospital closed in February 1919.
